Hair loss is one of those unfortunate facts of life that a significant number of men will have to contend with during their lifetime. According to the American Hair Loss Association, two-thirds of men will begin to see their locks lose some of their lusters by age 35. Once the big 5-0 rolls around, about 85 percent of men will have experienced a significant amount of thinning.
Even though hair loss is typically thought of as something that only men are burdened with, plenty of women experience their fair share of follicular challenges. In fact, an estimated 40 percent of hair loss sufferers are female. By the time they reach age 50, roughly half of all women will be dealing with some degree of pattern hair loss.
Are you suffering from hair loss? Are you wondering how to regrow your hair naturally? You can use essential oils to make some of the best topical home hair loss remedies. Below are 7 top hair loss remedies. Here are 7 essential oils to grow hair back on a balding forehead.
Rosemary oil
Rosemary essential oil has a powerful effect. It is one of the top essential oils when it comes to enhancing hair thickness and growth. Rosemary oil is believed to increase cellular metabolism that stimulates hair growth. Research published in 2015 even shows that rosemary oil appears to work as well as minoxidil, a conventional topical hair loss treatment.
It’s one of the freshest and pungent essential oils with its minty and woodsy scent. Rosemary’s aroma is instantly youthful and deliciously herbaceous.
Rosemary is packed with antioxidants which can prevent thinning hair and even graying hair. It’s another essential oil that promotes blood circulation, so it’s perfect for stimulating hair follicles and hair growth.
Furthermore, rosemary essential oil can help with over greasy scalps and hair as it tones down sebum production. It also clears pores, so it’s great for itchy scalps and dandruff relief.
As a precaution: It is not recommended to use rosemary essential oil when you are pregnant or if you suffer from epilepsy.
Homemade Remedy:
To use rosemary essential oil for hair growth:
- Heat 3 tsp of olive oil
- Blend in 10 drops of rosemary essential oil
- Use this blend as a hot oil treatment by blending it evenly over your scalp and through your hair
- Wrap your hair in a towel that has been dipped in hot water
- Leave it on for 30 minutes, then shampoo it out
- It’s recommended to do this about once a month
Spikenard oil
Spikenard oil is known for promoting the growth of hair, retaining its natural color and slowing down the process of graying. A 2011 study published in Pharmacognosy Magazine measured spikenard oil’s ability to stimulate hair growth. For the study, the crude extract, fractions and two of the isolated compounds were tested for their hair growth activity. Hair growth was tested on female Wistar rats that had hair removed in a four-centimeter square area before the study began.
The results indicate that spikenard oil showed a positive response in hair growth promotion activity; the crude spikenard extracts were more effective than the pure compounds. Because the isolated compounds were effective in different ways, when they were acting together in the extract, hair growth resumed within a short period of time. When using spikenard extract, there was a 30 percent reduction in the time it looks for the hair to grow back on the tested rats — showing that spikenard can work as a hair loss remedy.
Lavender oil
Studies have shown that lavender oil possesses hair growth-promoting effects. In a 2016 animal study, topical application of lavender oil proved to significantly increase the number of hair follicles in female mice. Lavender oil was also able to deepen the depth of hair follicles and thicken the thermal layer.
Lavender oil has antimicrobial properties, and it can be used to combat bacterial and fungal disorders. Some other lavender oil benefits are its ability to soothe the scalp and heal dry skin and hair. Plus, because emotional stress is a factor that can contribute to thinning hair, lavender oil can be used to create a tranquil and stress-free environment.

Alopecia areata is a common autoimmune skin disease resulting in hair loss on the face and scalp.
Cedarwood is an ideal essential oil for hair growth because it balances the oil-producing glands of the scalp. The warming oil significantly improves blood circulation which can result in vigorous hair growth. Furthermore, it’s antibacterial and antiseptic which treats fungal problems and dandruff builds up.
