Hair is the fastest growing tissue of the body. Our hair is created from proteins called keratins. Each strand of hair is composed of three layers:
The inner layer or medulla
Only present in thick hairs.
The middle layer or cortex
Which determines the strength, texture, and color of hair
Cuticle
Which protects the cortex.
Some Important Hair Factors
Hair grows from the roots. The roots are enclosed in follicles and below our follicles is a layer of skin called the dermal papilla. It is fed by the bloodstream carrying nourishments vital to the growth of hair.
Only the roots of the hair are actually alive. The visible part of the hair is dead tissue, and therefore unable to heal itself. It is vital then to take care of the scalp and body in order to promote hair growth and healthy hair.
Below are some natural herbal supplements that help with hair growth and prevent hair loss for both men and women.
Caffeine
The main benefit of caffeine is that it can help promote hair growth straight from the root in the initial phases of hair growth. It does this by targeting a hormone called ‘DHT’, which causes hair loss. Caffeine helps increases blood circulation to the scalp which promotes healthy hair follicles.
Saw Palmetto
There have been some herbalists that have experimented with the herb Saw Palmetto in order to block the production of DHT in treating BPH. Although most studies of Saw Palmetto have been for the treatment of prostatic disease, more recent studies have been conducted on its effectiveness in treating hair loss.
The herb works in fighting benign prostatic disease by lowering levels of DHT. DHT is a known cause of androgenetic alopecia. Studies have shown Saw Palmetto extract is an effective anti-androgen. This means there is a promise for its effectiveness as an effective treatment for hair loss prevention.
Women who take Saw Palmetto should cease doing so when taking oral contraceptives or hormone therapy.
Pygeum Bark Extract
Pygeum Bark is a beneficial treatment for hair loss due to its effective DHT-blocking ability.
Pumpkin Seed Oil
Pumpkin seed oil prevents hair loss and promotes hair regrowth. It does this by lowering the androgen (male hormone, DHT) activity, taming inflammation, decreasing the constriction of blood vessels in the scalp, and replacing the elements necessary for hair regrowth.
Cayenne Extract
Cayenne Extract (Capsaicin) increases blood circulation throughout the scalp to deliver more essential nutrients to the hair follicle required for healthy hair growth.
Studies indicate that cayenne pepper stimulates the hair follicles to help with hair growth. Cayenne pepper contains a natural cannabinoid blocker. In fact, it is one of the only known natural elements that contain this blocker, also known as CB1.
The endocannabinoid system is a group of receptors within the body that manage a variety of the body’s natural processes, including appetite, pain, and many other factors, which is why cayenne pepper is so good for the body overall. But recently, scientists have noticed that the endocannabinoid system also has an effect on hair loss.
Green Tea Extract
It is rich in catechins, which help to reduce dihydrotestosterone (DHT), responsible for hair loss. As a result, green tea stops hair fall. It helps to fight dryness of the scalp and dandruff. Polyphenol, found in green tea, is good for hair roots and hair follicles, which leads to hair regrowth.
A Healthy Lifestyle Matters
Hair is a living protein, and as with any living part of our bodies, we must maintain proper health to optimize our chances of maintaining a healthy head of hair.
Proper nutrition is vital to maintaining healthy hair since hair is a living and growing part of the body’s system. Viewing it in this manner can help us to treat our bodies differently and raise expectations through proper care.
A healthy balanced diet, occasionally with the help of vitamin, mineral and herbal supplements along with exercise are all key components to a healthy regimen of maintaining healthy hair.
Over 95% of people that suffer hair loss have Male Pattern Baldness (MPB) or androgenetic alopecia. It is a condition that is caused by a rise in DHT (a direct component of testosterone). The scientific developments of the past two decades have brought hope and promise to many who suffer from this type of hair loss.
Treatments like Hair Restoration Laboratories have brought relief to many who would have previously had to settle for gradual hair loss, wigs, or hairpieces.
The discovery of the role of DHT in preventing hair loss has even opened the doors to possible herbal solutions to hair loss prevention, such as saw palmetto, Green Tea Extract, Pumpkin Seed Oil and Pygeum Bark Extract.
Even more promising is the fact that the hair loss commonly known as androgenetic alopecia is found to occur mainly in Western civilization or those who have adopted the ways of Western civilization.
This could mean that there may be dietary practices that contribute to hair loss and therefore giving hope to the possibility that diet could control not only temporary hair loss but androgenetic alopecia as well.
You’ll learn more about that in my next article. For now, you find all herbal supplements I mentioned in Hair Restoration’s shampoos, conditioners, and serums.
I have tried their products along with my husband and both of us have seen an improvement in our hair and hair growth. I recommend that you try them as well and be sure to let me know your thoughts about the product after you tried them.
